Four Gulf-side rows on the Tampa International Airport distance table, priced by its own taxi formula

Tampa International Airport lists St. Petersburg and Clearwater at 20 miles, Clearwater Beach at 20-25 and St. Pete Beach at 27, and Yellow Cab’s meter bills those at $59.93, $59.93 to $74.18 and $79.88. PSTA’s 727 Airport Express would carry two adults to downtown St. Petersburg for $4.50, and it is announced for October 2026.

The taxi ride from Tampa International Airport to Clearwater Beach is a 20-25 mile trip on the airport’s distance table and costs $59.93 to $74.18 on Yellow Cab’s published meter. Every figure below assumes two adults with checked bags in one vehicle, and every page behind it was read twice on 14 September 2026 with matching extracted text.

PSTA and HART are not sources here in their own right. Both bus routes appear only as Tampa International Airport describes them in its newsroom, and the one other issuer quoted is Uber, through four route pages it publishes from TPA.

Three of the five rows carry a fixed published price: two buses at $2.25 a head and one meter formula. Of those three, only the meter reaches all four Gulf-side rows door to door, and for two riders it costs between 13 and 18 times the $4.50 the same pair pays on either bus. Uber’s averages land in between, at $39 to $51 before the fee. Door to door is where the money goes.

What the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority prints for the Gulf side, and where its $40 flat rate stops

Hillsborough County Aviation Authority publishes 18 approximate distances from Tampa International Airport on its ground transportation page, and four of them are the destinations this guide prices: St. Petersburg and Clearwater at 20 miles, Clearwater Beach at 20-25 and St. Pete Beach at 27. None of the four carries a flat rate.

The flat rate that does exist names two places. Yellow Cab charges a flat rate fee of $40 to downtown Tampa and the cruise terminal, alongside a meter of $3.50 for the first 1/5 of a mile or part thereof plus $2.85 per mile and a $22 minimum fee from the airport. Run backwards, that minimum runs out at 6.7 miles, and the nearest of the four rows sits 13.3 miles past that point, so on this trip the meter alone sets the bill.

Each mode starts at a different curb. Yellow Cab waits outside the Baggage Claim Level in Ground Transportation Areas Red 1 and Blue 2. Lyft, Uber and Wridz collect passengers at Red Express Curbside, Blue Express Curbside or the SkyCenter One office building remote curbside, with a service fee of $5.00 added to the cost of the fare. The HART and PSTA bus stop is at the Rental Car Center, a SkyConnect ride away, and the curb-by-curb picture of every mode Tampa International Airport permits at its terminal goes further than this trip needs.

Yellow Cab’s formula over 20, 21, 25, 27 and 29 miles, and the two miles Uber adds to the beach

Yellow Cab’s published formula gives $59.93 at 20 miles, $74.18 at 25 and $79.88 at 27 when the $3.50 covers the first 1/5 of a mile and $2.85 applies to each mile after it. Charging the full distance at $2.85 instead adds 57 cents to each trip, for $60.50, $74.75 and $80.45.

St Pete Beach at 29 milesUber route page, as a historical average$85.58$86.15$45.58 to $46.15

Two issuers measure the beach trip differently. Hillsborough County Aviation Authority prints 27 miles, and Uber’s page for the same trip prints an average route distance of 29 miles; those two miles cost $5.70 at $2.85 each. The airport calls its distances approximate and Uber calls its figure historical, so a fair cab budget for that beach is $79.88 to $85.58 rather than one number.

Clearwater is where both issuers agree, at 20 miles. Clearwater Beach is the row the airport prints as a range, which is why its meter spans $14.25, and Uber’s page to a resort there measures 21 miles, inside that range; its page to a downtown hotel on the city row measures 21 against the airport’s 20. At 27 miles the meter lands 12 cents short of double the $40 flat rate.

The PSTA 727 Airport Express as Tampa International Airport announced it on 28 July 2026

PSTA’s 727 Airport Express is a premium bus route from downtown St. Petersburg to Tampa International Airport, announced in the airport newsroom on 28 July 2026 with one-way fares of $2.25, a bus every 75 minutes, seven days a week, and nine downtown stops. The post says the route is expected to launch in October and names no day.

PSTA made the announcement on July 27, which the post notes is also known as 727 Day in celebration of the Pinellas County area code. The post states the start twice, once as a service scheduled to begin in October and once as expected to launch in October, and the newsroom sitemap still dates the page 28 July 2026.

Beyond the fare and the interval, the post lists luggage racks, connections to SunRunner stops and the Pinellas County Beaches from the downtown stops, and one claim of precedence: the first public transit route to use the new Howard Frankland Bridge express lanes. Airport CEO Michael Stephens is quoted putting the audience at 25 million annual passengers and nearly 11,000 employees.

What the post leaves out is most of a timetable. It prints no first or last departure, no running time across the bridge, no names for the nine stops, no fare for the onward connection to the beaches and no boarding point at the airport. On 14 September 2026 the airport’s ground transportation page still placed the HART and PSTA stop at the Rental Car Center without naming the 727, and none of the 1,295 addresses in the newsroom sitemap that day was a later post about the route.

A traveler landing on 15 October 2026 may find the route running or not, and the airport has not said which. The cab arithmetic for the 9.5 miles from TPA to the cruise terminal mentions the same announcement for a trip the 727 does not make. No day, no timetable, one fare.

Two Tampa International newsroom posts give the 300X Airport Express a 6:00 p.m. close and an 8:00 p.m. last bus

PSTA’s 300X Airport Express is the Pinellas bus already running, and the Tampa International Airport newsroom prices it at $2.25 in a post of 19 August 2025. That post says the 300X currently runs only on weekdays between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., then says in the next sentence that the last bus of the night leaves TPA at 8:00 p.m.

A holiday travel list dated 25 November 2025 puts the same hours into one sentence: the 300X service operates on weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the last return bus departing TPA around 8:00 p.m. The same list pitches the route as a way to get to the airport and back for less than $5, which is two $2.25 fares.

Neither post says which direction the 6:00 p.m. belongs to. Both put the last departure from the airport at 8:00 p.m., one with the word around, and a traveler landing at 7:00 p.m. on a Tuesday sits outside the operating window in one clause and inside the last-bus clause in the other. A Saturday landing has no 300X in either post.

The Pinellas end of the route is older than its fare. An airport post from June 2018 describes the 300X leaving a free Park N Ride lot in Largo, at 8780 Ulmerton Rd., for the Rental Car Center’s SkyConnect station eight times a day on weekdays, at a regular fare of $3 each way. That post calls it the area’s first bus service from Pinellas County to the airport, and the 2026 post quotes PSTA CEO Brad Miller calling the 727 a first direct, premium connection from downtown. None of the three airport posts names any of the four Gulf-side rows as a stop, and the fare the airport prints fell from $3 in 2018 to $2.25 in 2025.

Uber prints averages for all four Gulf-side rows, two of them through hotel addresses

Uber publishes route pages for Tampa Airport (TPA) to Clearwater, FL and to St Pete Beach, FL, and the St Pete Beach page links to route pages for two hotels, one downtown on the city row and one on Clearwater Beach, that stand in for the other two rows. Each of the four prints a historical average rather than a fare.

Uber route from Tampa Airport (TPA)Average travel timeAverage route priceAverage route distanceUberX averageLarger vehicle average Uber lists
Clearwater, FL35 minutes$4420 miles$40UberXL $56, UberXXL $67
St Pete Beach, FL36 minutes$5129 miles$49UberXL $62
Hyatt Place St. Petersburg / Downtown24 minutes$3921 milesn/a: no ride options listedn/a: no ride options listed
Wyndham Clearwater Beach Resort39 minutes$4421 miles$40UberXXL $58

Uber describes UberX as rides for up to 4 passengers, UberXL for groups up to 6 and UberXXL for 6 with room for extra luggage. The hotel pages read oddly against the city ones: the downtown hotel averages 24 minutes over 21 miles, faster than the 35 minutes Uber gives Clearwater over 20, and the resort page’s own footnote names its destination The Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach rather than the resort in its title.

The footnotes pull two ways. Beneath the ride options Uber says the prices reflect the average for each option over the past 1 month, while the Clearwater and St Pete Beach pages each carry a summary paragraph that repeats the same average and time and ends with Updated December, 2024. A monthly average that still matches a figure stamped 21 months earlier is either very stable or older than its footnote, and neither page says which.

None of the four Uber pages mentions a fee, so whether the airport’s $5.00 sits inside those averages goes unstated. Added on top, $39, $44 and $51 become $44.00, $49.00 and $56.00.

Two adults with checked bags leaving Tampa International Airport for the Gulf side, a winner for each destination

For two adults with checked bags, the published figures name a winner for each of the four rows, and Uber’s averages take three of them. Each verdict names its criterion and its weak point.

Downtown at the Pinellas end of the 727: the bus, once it runs. Criterion: $4.50 for the pair against $59.93 on the meter, a $55.43 gap on one ride, with Uber’s $39 average to a downtown hotel, $44.00 with the fee, in second place. Its weak point is everything the 28 July post leaves out, and a missed bus costs 75 minutes, which is 62.5 percent of the two hours the airport FAQ suggests arriving before a domestic flight.

Clearwater: an UberX, on Uber’s own average. Criterion: $40, or $45.00 with the airport’s $5.00 fee, against $59.93 on the meter, which leaves the app $14.93 ahead even at the higher figure. The risk is that a monthly average is not a quote, on a page stamped December 2024.

Clearwater Beach: an UberX to the resort Uber lists. Criterion: $40, or $45.00 with the fee, against $59.93 to $74.18 across the airport’s range and $62.78 at Uber’s own 21 miles, a margin of $14.93 to $29.18. Against it stands a single resort address doing duty for a five mile range, on a page whose footnote names a differently titled Wyndham.

St Pete Beach: an UberX again, by the widest margin. Criterion: $49, or $54.00 with the fee, against $79.88 at the airport’s 27 miles and $85.58 at Uber’s 29, a margin of $25.88 to $31.58. What limits it is the same averaging, on a trip where the two issuers disagree about the length.

A party of five or six: split by distance. To Clearwater, Yellow Cab’s $59.93 beats UberXXL’s $67 average plus $5.00 by $12.07; to St Pete Beach, UberXL’s $62 average plus $5.00 beats the $79.88 meter by $12.88; and to the Clearwater Beach resort, UberXXL’s $58 plus $5.00 is $63.00, 22 cents above the $62.78 meter at 21 miles. On the cab side, Hillsborough County Aviation Authority publishes no passenger limit and no larger vehicle rate for Yellow Cab, so the vehicle size is worth confirming at Red 1 or Blue 2 before the bags go in.

A weekday landing before 6:00 p.m. with light bags, bound for Largo: the 300X. Criterion: $2.25 a head to the Ulmerton Road lot the 2018 airport post places in Largo. Its gap is the last leg, which no airport post prices.

Several days on both sides of the bay: a rental car. Criterion: the airport’s 21 August 2026 guide says renting a vehicle is highly recommended to explore both sides, and 14 on-airport brands sit one SkyConnect ride from the Main Terminal, a ride the airport FAQ times at less than five minutes. A second airport item of the same date, Your Guide to Tampa, Florida, tells first-time visitors to rent a car to reach nearby beaches like Clearwater Beach (20 minutes away) without saying from where, against the 39 minute average Uber prints from TPA to a resort on that beach. The price is the unknown: no airport page read for this guide prints a daily rate, and the fourteen counters at the Tampa Rental Car Center come with telephone numbers rather than tariffs.

Details on the Tampa International and Uber pages that change a Gulf-side arrival

  • Remote bag check at the Rental Car Center serves most domestic passengers from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 90 minute cutoff, by the ground transportation page, so a renter driving back from the beaches has to reach the counter by 5:00 p.m. and 90 minutes before departure, which rules out a flight before 6:30 a.m. and sets no limit on a later one.
  • The 300X post of 19 August 2025 records a 3:17 p.m. departure from the Park and Ride lot on Ulmerton Road and arrival at the airport by 4:00 p.m., 43 minutes on the clock, while the same post calls it a 45-minute trip across the Howard Frankland Bridge.
  • Uber’s Clearwater page also lists Share at $24 for 1 rider and Premier SUV at $103 for 6, and says Uber Reserve can be requested from 2 hours to 90 days ahead where the app offers it at TPA.
  • The airport’s where to stay guide of 21 August 2026 names two areas on the St. Pete side, the downtown and the beach with Pass-a-Grille, and no Clearwater area at all, and its one drive time starts in downtown Tampa rather than at the airport.
  • Waiting is not allowed at the Rental Car Center remote curb where the HART and PSTA stop sits, and the ground transportation page sends anyone who must wait to the free Cell Phone Lot near the Rental Car Center.
  • A night across the bay starts with a question the airport does not answer, because it publishes no hotel list; what Tampa International Airport does say about beds near its terminal comes down to one hotel and a curb rule.
  • Leaving a car at the airport instead of riding a bus home costs one of three 24 hour ceilings, $32, $26 or $22 with tax included, broken down in what each Tampa International garage charges hour by hour.

Five ways a Tampa airport to Pinellas County plan comes apart in October 2026

The first is building a trip on a launch day that has not been published. As of 14 September 2026 the airport describes the 727 Airport Express as expected to launch in October, so an arrival planned on it for 15 October rests on one sentence. The fallback for two adults to the same downtown is the $59.93 meter, $55.43 more than the bus.

Second is carrying the $40 flat rate across the bay. That fee is written for downtown Tampa and the cruise terminal only, and the 27 mile beach row meters at $79.88, which is $39.88 above it.

Third is reading one 300X sentence and not the other. A 6:45 p.m. landing falls after the 6:00 p.m. close in one clause and before the 8:00 p.m. last bus in the next, and a weekend landing has no 300X in either airport post. The 727 is announced for seven days a week and had no start day on 14 September 2026.

Fourth is treating an Uber average as a price. The Uber footnote says past 1 month while the summaries on its city pages say December 2024, none of the four pages mentions the airport’s $5.00 fee, and the beach trip runs 29 miles on Uber against 27 on the airport’s table.

Fifth is the drive back to return a rental car. The directions page sends drivers from St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Gulf Beaches and the West up Interstate 275 North to exit 39, while the dropping off page and the pick up and drop off guide say I-275 North to exit 39B, all three read twice on 14 September 2026 with the same text each time. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise states that the TOLL-BY-PLATE payment option is not available for customers in rental cars (verified August 2026), so any toll on the way reaches the traveler through the rental contract; the airport’s 727 post calls the new Howard Frankland Bridge lanes express lanes and prints no toll.

The pages behind each Gulf-side figure, and the day each was read

The figures in this guide were verified in September 2026 against the sources named in each section. Parking rates usually change in January, shuttle fares and cruise line transfer prices change by season, and ship schedules change weekly; check the issuer’s page before you travel. No provider paid for placement here, and none can pay to appear. Where a booking link earns Lot and Gate a commission it is marked as sponsored and flagged in this line, and as of September 2026 no affiliate link is live anywhere on this site.

Tampa International Airport figures were read on 14 September 2026, each page twice, with the extracted text compared between readings. The ground transportation page supplied the Yellow Cab formula, the $40 flat rate, the 18 distances, the $5.00 ride app fee, the bus stop, the remote bag check and the 14 rental brands, and its text matched the reading taken on 11 September 2026. The directions page, the dropping off page and the pick up and drop off guide supplied the two exit numbers; the airport FAQ the SkyConnect time and the two hour arrival advice; the where to stay guide and Your Guide to Tampa, Florida, both of 21 August 2026, the two drive times and the rental recommendation.

Bus figures come only from the airport newsroom, found through its sitemap of 1,295 addresses: the post of 28 July 2026 on the 727, the posts of 19 August 2025 and 25 November 2025 on the 300X, and the June 2018 post on its launch. Neither PSTA’s nor HART’s own site is a source here. Uber figures come from its route pages for TPA to Clearwater and to St Pete Beach and from the two hotel route pages the St Pete Beach page links to, all four read twice the same day with identical text. The three garage ceilings are the September 2026 readings behind the Tampa parking guides linked in this piece, and the rental car toll rule is Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, read in August 2026.

What travelers ask about the ride from TPA to Clearwater Beach and the Pinellas side

The six answers below use the readings of 14 September 2026, when the 727 Airport Express still had no launch day and Yellow Cab’s meter stood at $2.85 a mile.

How much is a taxi from Tampa airport to Clearwater Beach?

Tampa International Airport lists Clearwater Beach at 20-25 miles and publishes a Yellow Cab meter of $3.50 for the first 1/5 of a mile plus $2.85 per mile, which comes to $59.93 at 20 miles and $74.18 at 25. Its $40 flat rate covers only downtown Tampa and the cruise terminal.

How far is St. Pete Beach from Tampa International Airport?

The airport’s distance table puts the beach town at 27 miles, which Yellow Cab’s published meter bills at $79.88. Uber’s route page for the same trip gives an average distance of 29 miles, and at $2.85 a mile those two extra miles would add $5.70, for a metered fare of $85.58.

When does the PSTA 727 Airport Express start?

No day has been published. The Tampa International Airport newsroom post of 28 July 2026 says the route is expected to launch in October, and no later airport post had fixed a date by 14 September 2026. PSTA announced it for seven days a week, every 75 minutes, at $2.25 one way.

Is there a bus from Tampa airport to downtown St. Pete?

Not on a published date. PSTA’s 727 Airport Express is announced for October 2026 with nine downtown stops at $2.25. The 300X already runs on weekdays at $2.25 toward Pinellas County, but the airport’s posts place its Pinellas end at the Ulmerton Road park and ride in Largo and give a last bus from the airport at 8:00 p.m.

How much is an Uber from Tampa airport to Clearwater?

Uber’s route page prints an average of $44 for the 20 miles from Tampa Airport to Clearwater, with UberX at $40, UberXL at $56 and an average time of 35 minutes. The airport adds a $5.00 service fee to ride app fares from its curbs, and no Uber route page read for this guide mentions that fee.

Where does the Pinellas bus leave from at Tampa airport?

From the Rental Car Center, not the Main Terminal. Tampa’s airport authority places the HART and PSTA bus stop at the remote curb there, reached by the SkyConnect train in less than five minutes according to the airport FAQ. The 727 announcement of 28 July 2026 does not say where the new route will board.

A meter that reaches every Gulf-side row, and a $2.25 bus that has not started

Hillsborough County Aviation Authority has put two kinds of number on the far side of its distance table: a meter that reaches every Gulf-side row for $59.93 to $79.88, and a $2.25 fare to one downtown with no start day attached. Between them sits a factor of 13 to 18 for two riders.

For now the lowest fare to a downtown on the Gulf side lives in a newsroom post, not a timetable.
