Tampa International Airport lists Disney World and Orlando as separate rows, 9 miles apart
Tampa International Airport puts Disney World at 76 miles and Orlando at 85 miles in its table of approximate distances, and fixes a fare for neither. Its ground transportation page offers the Yellow Cab meter, carries no shuttle heading, names no bus route and prints no rental rate.
So the Tampa airport to Orlando and Disney World question splits in two before any mode is chosen. Tampa International Airport to Walt Disney World is a 76 mile trip in the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority’s distance table, 9 miles shorter than the 85 it lists for Orlando.
Every airport figure below comes from tampaairport.com, and its ground transportation page was read twice on 7 October 2026 with matching extracted text. Uber’s figures come from eight route pages between TPA and the Orlando area, read twice the same day. They are averages over the past month rather than quotes, and the same pages read on 14 September 2026 gave different numbers, which turns out to be part of the answer.
| Way from Tampa International toward Orlando | What its issuer publishes | Issuer | Names Disney World |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow Cab taxi | $3.50 for the first 1/5 mile plus $2.85 per mile, $22 minimum; the $40 flat rate reaches only downtown Tampa and the cruise terminal | Hillsborough County Aviation Authority | Yes, through the 76 mile distance row |
| Uber from the airport curb | Lake Buena Vista, FL at a $100 average over 79 miles and Orlando, FL at $111 over 91 miles, with UberX at $104 on both; the airport adds a $5.00 service fee | Uber, with the fee from the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority | No: Lake Buena Vista is the nearest destination Uber files |
| On-airport rental car, 14 brands | Counters at the Rental Car Center, reached by the SkyConnect train; no rate for any company | Hillsborough County Aviation Authority | Only in the distance table and in its directions |
| Shuttle | n/a: no shuttle heading anywhere on the ground transportation page | Hillsborough County Aviation Authority | n/a |
| Public bus | Stop at the Rental Car Center, with the route map and schedule posted at the stop and no route named on the page | Hillsborough County Aviation Authority | n/a |
What the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority tells a traveler heading east on Interstate 4
Directions on the airport site are written for the inbound driver, and they name the theme parks outright: “From Lakeland, Plant City, Orlando, Disney/Universal theme parks and the East Take Interstate 4 West to Interstate 275 South to exit 39.” Reversed, that sentence is the whole route east. The same page places the airport five miles west of downtown Tampa, which is a location rather than a road distance.
Seven mode headings organize the ground transportation page: Rental Cars, Taxis, Bus Service/Public Transportation, Public Bus, Chartered Bus and Hotel Bus Service, Ride App Pickup and Peer-to-Peer Vehicle Sharing. In both readings the word shuttle appears nowhere in its text. Its bus block places the HART and PSTA stop at the Rental Car Center and says the route map and schedule are posted at the stop. The two route numbers the airport has named on other pages, the PSTA 300X and HART’s Route 275 Limited Express, start from a Park and Ride on Ulmerton Road and from Wesley Chapel, as laid out in the mode by mode guide to Tampa International Airport’s curbs.
A rental car is the one mode the airport actively recommends. Its visitor guide of 21 August 2026 says renting a vehicle is highly recommended and suggests working “a few amusement parks and Central Florida attractions” into a “loop.” The link under that paragraph reads Pre-book your Tampa Airport rental car here, and it opens the ground transportation page: 14 on-airport brands, 13 off-airport companies, telephone numbers and not one rate. How those counters are reached is covered in the Rental Car Center guide, one SkyConnect stop past the Economy Garage.
One route, two rows, no price.
Uber files Lake Buena Vista and Orlando from TPA, and no Disney park or resort
Uber publishes route pages from Tampa International Airport, each with an average price, travel time and distance. Its route sitemaps, read on 7 October 2026, list 258 routes to or from TPA, and none names a Walt Disney World park, a Disney resort or Disney Springs. Lake Buena Vista, FL is the nearest, at an average of $100, 1.5 hours and 79 miles, with three ride options: Wait & Save at $72, UberX at $104 and UberXXL at $110.
Orlando, FL has its own page at $111, 1.7 hours and 91 miles, with eight options running from Wait & Save at $86 and UberX at $104 up to Premier SUV at $295. Orlando International Airport reads $115 and 93 miles, Davenport, FL reads $90 and 71 miles, and Florida Center, Orlando reads $104 and 85 miles. Each page states that its prices reflect the average for the ride option shown for the past 1 month and are not fixed prices. Three of the eight pages read also carry a note stamped Updated December, 2024, which gives those averages two dates at once.
The month in that footnote is a moving window, and it moved. On 14 September 2026 the Lake Buena Vista page read a $99 average, UberX at $77 and UberXXL at $142, with no Wait & Save row; 23 days later UberX had risen $27 and UberXXL had fallen $32, while the headline moved by $1. Over the same weeks the Orlando, FL page’s UberX row went from $111 to $104.
None of the eight mentions the $5.00 service fee Tampa International adds to the cost of the fare for Lyft, Uber and Wridz pickups at Red Express Curbside, Blue Express Curbside or the SkyCenter One remote curbside. That fee lives only on the airport’s page, and the airport attaches it to guests departing the airport. The same Uber format covers the Gulf side, compared in the TPA to Clearwater and St. Pete breakdown.
Uber prices a town, not a park.
Compiled: every published figure for leaving Tampa International toward the Orlando area
No page on either site puts these side by side. Each cell names its issuer, and the two meter rows apply the airport’s formula to the airport’s own distances, so they are calculations rather than quoted fares.
| Mode and destination | Published or calculated cost | Distance and time | Where it is paid | Limitation | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow Cab meter to Disney World | $219.53 calculated: $3.50 plus 75.8 miles at $2.85 (Hillsborough County Aviation Authority formula) | 76 miles in the airport table; no time published | Driver, when the meter stops | No flat rate beyond downtown Tampa and the cruise terminal | A price built only from airport figures |
| Yellow Cab meter to Orlando | $245.18 calculated: $3.50 plus 84.8 miles at $2.85 | 85 miles in the airport table; no time published | Driver, when the meter stops | Same formula over 9 more miles | A fixed reference point rather than a booking |
| Uber Wait & Save to Lake Buena Vista, FL | $72 average plus the airport’s $5.00 fee, $77 (Uber and the airport) | 79 miles and 1.5 hours, Uber averages | App, at booking | Trades a longer wait for the price; the row was absent on 14 September 2026 | Two riders with time to spare after landing |
| UberX to Lake Buena Vista, FL | $104 average plus $5.00, $109 (Uber and the airport) | 79 miles and 1.5 hours, Uber averages | App, at booking | The same row read $77 on 14 September 2026 | One to four riders who want the standard option |
| UberXXL to Lake Buena Vista, FL | $110 average plus $5.00, $115 (Uber and the airport) | 79 miles and 1.5 hours, Uber averages | App, at booking | Only $6 above UberX, and $32 under its 14 September 2026 reading | A party of five or six with luggage |
| UberX to Orlando, FL | $104 average plus $5.00, $109 (Uber and the airport) | 91 miles and 1.7 hours, Uber averages | App, at booking | Same UberX average as Lake Buena Vista over 12 more of Uber’s miles | A hotel inside the city of Orlando |
| Uber to Orlando International Airport | $115 average, UberX $103, $120 and $108 with the $5.00 fee (Uber and the airport) | 93 miles and 1.7 hours, Uber averages | App, at booking | The airport’s own table says 92 miles | A traveler flying home from MCO instead |
| On-airport rental car | No rate from the airport for any of the 14 brands | 76 miles to Disney World by the airport table, on Interstate 4 | Counter at the Rental Car Center | SkyConnect is timed at under five minutes in the airport FAQ and under 12 in two news posts | A stay with several parks, the loop the airport’s guide describes |
| Shuttle or public bus | n/a: no shuttle heading and no route named on the ground transportation page | n/a | n/a | Schedules are posted at the Rental Car Center stop, not online | Nobody heading to Orlando on the airport’s own information |
Uber’s outbound mileage runs past the airport’s table, and its return pages match it to the mile
Set Uber’s distances beside the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority’s and a pattern appears that neither issuer explains. Leaving TPA, Uber gives Orlando, FL 91 miles against the airport’s 85, and Orlando International Airport 93 miles against 92. Coming back, its Orlando, FL to TPA page reads 85 miles and its MCO to TPA page reads 92, the same as the airport’s two rows.
| Place, as each issuer names it | Tampa International table | Uber, leaving TPA | Uber, returning to TPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orlando | 85 miles | 91 miles, $111 average, UberX $104 | 85 miles, $96 average, UberX $96 |
| Orlando International Airport | 92 miles | 93 miles, $115 average, UberX $103 | 92 miles, $126 average, UberX $111 |
| Disney World in the airport table, Lake Buena Vista, FL at Uber | 76 miles | 79 miles, $100 average, UberX $104 | n/a: no page in Uber’s route sitemaps |
| Florida Center, Orlando | n/a: not a row in the airport table | 85 miles, $104 average, UberX $101 | 84 miles, $93 average, UberX $103 |
Prices shift with direction too, and not always the same way. Orlando to TPA averages $96 against $111 outbound, $15 less, with UberX at $96 against $104. MCO to TPA averages $126 against $115 outbound, $11 more, and its UberX row is $8 more, $111 against $103. Florida Center, Orlando is the odd pair: its return average is $11 under the outbound $104, yet its return UberX row, $103, sits $2 above the outbound $101. Dividing each headline by its own mileage, which is my arithmetic and not Uber’s, gives $1.27 a mile toward Lake Buena Vista, $1.22 toward Orlando, $1.13 on the way back from Orlando and $1.37 from MCO.
The return is where Disney drops out. Uber’s sitemaps list no page from Lake Buena Vista to TPA, and a request for that address returned Page Not Found on 14 September and again on 7 October 2026. The nearest published return averages are Orlando, FL at $96 and Florida Center, Orlando at $93 over 84 miles. Nor does the $5.00 fee follow the traveler home: the airport attaches it to guests departing, and says drop-offs may happen at any public access location, with no fee stated.
Distance is the stable half; price is the moving one.
Which way from Tampa International to Lake Buena Vista or Orlando wins, by party and by length of stay
Two adults going straight to a Disney area hotel: an Uber booked on the Lake Buena Vista page wins. Criterion: Wait & Save at $72 plus the $5.00 fee is $77, and UberX at $104 plus the fee is $109, against the $219.53 the airport’s meter formula reaches over its own 76 miles, a gap of $110.53 even at the UberX row. Nuance: that UberX row read $77 on 14 September 2026, so the $82 a couple would have budgeted then now falls $27 short, while the meter, the fee and the mileage, all from the airport, held still between the two readings.
For a party of five or six, UberXXL wins on the same logic, $110 plus $5.00 for $115 on the Lake Buena Vista page. Criterion: the lowest published figure for six seats. Nuance: that row sits only $6 above UberX and $32 under the $142 it read on 14 September 2026, the kind of swing a one month average produces, and the airport publishes no passenger limit for Yellow Cab, so the cab’s capacity is unknown rather than unfavorable, and a phone call to (813) 253-0121 settles it before landing.
A stay in Orlando rather than at Disney now moves the map more than the price. The airport table adds 9 miles between the two rows and Uber’s pages add 12, yet on 7 October 2026 both pages carried the same $104 UberX average, where on 14 September they stood $34 apart. UberX wins for an Orlando hotel at $109 with the fee, against $245.18 on the meter, and Wait & Save at $86 plus the fee, $91, undercuts it for riders who can wait. The gap reopens for large parties: the Orlando, FL page lists UberXL at $158 and UberXXL at $192, against $110 for UberXXL on the Lake Buena Vista page. The Orlando, FL page also describes a city rather than an address.
A week with several parks goes to the rental car. Criterion: it is the one mode the airport recommends for Central Florida attractions, in its own words, and the only one whose pickup it documents from baggage claim to the SkyConnect train to the counters. Nuance: no airport page prices a single rental day, and the pre-book link lands on telephone numbers. Whether Tampa is the right airport for this trip at all is a separate question, weighed in what four Central Florida airports publish about reaching Walt Disney World.
A traveler flying home from Orlando International instead removes the unpriced return. That side of the trip is priced on Orlando’s own pages, set out in the Mears Connect fares between MCO and the Disney resort hotels.
Details on the Tampa International and Uber pages that change an Orlando-bound arrival
- Uber’s Lake Buena Vista page shows three ride options, Wait & Save at $72, UberX at $104 and UberXXL at $110, while its Orlando, FL page shows eight, from Wait & Save at $86 to Premier SUV at $295. The $100 Lake Buena Vista headline sits $4 under that page’s own UberX row.
- Among the eastbound pages, Davenport, FL sits at 71 miles, 8 short of Lake Buena Vista, and averages $90, $10 less. On 7 October 2026 its page listed no ride option rows at all, where on 14 September it showed UberX at $84.
- Wait & Save is not always the cheaper row. On the Orlando, FL to TPA page it averages $102, $6 above that page’s UberX at $96, while a Wait More & Save More row sits at $69 under both.
- Remote Bag Check at the Rental Car Center runs 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 90 minute cutoff before departure, so a renter who drives the 76 miles back and returns the car after 5:00 p.m. takes every bag onto the train.
- Three of the 18 rows in the airport’s distance table name Orlando or Disney: Disney World, Orlando International Airport and Orlando. Busch Gardens, at 16 miles, is the nearest theme park on the same table.
- Yellow Cab works the Baggage Claim Level at Ground Transportation Areas Red 1 and Blue 2, a different curb from the ride app pickups.
- An evening landing that pushes the drive east to the next morning leaves the airport’s own hotel information thin: it names one property, as shown in what Tampa International publishes about rooms beside the terminal.
Five ways a Tampa to Disney ground plan comes apart
Budgeting a Disney stay from the Orlando row causes the first failure, though no longer at the UberX level, where both pages read $104 on 7 October 2026. It bites for groups: the airport’s table puts Orlando 9 miles beyond Disney World, and Uber’s Orlando, FL page puts UberXXL at $192 against $110 on the Lake Buena Vista page, so a party of six bound for a Lake Buena Vista hotel who prices the Orlando page overstates the ride by $82, or 75 percent.
Reading Uber’s headline as the UberX fare is the second, and the error runs both ways. On the Lake Buena Vista page the headline is $100 and UberX is $104; on the MCO to TPA page the headline is $126 and UberX $111. Treating a mid September reading as current is the same mistake on a calendar, since that UberX row moved from $77 to $104 in 23 days. Forgetting the fee, or charging it twice, comes third: the $5.00 is added on pickups at TPA, appears on none of the Uber pages, and carries no counterpart on the return drop-off.
Looking for a shuttle desk is the fourth. With no shuttle heading on the ground transportation page, the airport’s visitor guide answers the Central Florida question with a rental car. Anyone spending a night downtown first will find the one flat fare the airport does publish in the ride from TPA into downtown Tampa and the Channel District.
Pricing a train from Uber’s text is the fifth. Its Orlando, FL page describes an Amtrak ride from Tampa Union Station and its MCO page a train from the same station, each with a fare and a time of their own, but Uber does not run that train, so neither figure is repeated here. Amtrak’s own trains from Orlando page lists Tampa, FL among 12 destinations, and the fare for that pair is the one to read on amtrak.com at booking, for a station that is not the airport.
The pages behind each Orlando-bound figure, and the day each was read twice
Airport figures came from tampaairport.com. Its ground transportation page, the source of the 18 distances, the taxi formula, the $5.00 fee, the mode headings and the bus stop, was read on 7 October 2026 in two separate requests with a cache buster and identical extracted text, and gave the same figures as on 14 September. The two rental tables, the directions page for the Interstate 4 route and the visitor guide of 21 August 2026 for the rental recommendation and its link were read on 14 September 2026. SkyConnect timings come from the airport FAQ and two news posts of 20 March 2026, and the 300X and Route 275 Limited Express from airport pages read on 10 September 2026. Uber figures came from eight uber.com/global/en/r/routes/ pages found through Uber’s own route sitemaps rather than guessed, each read twice on 7 October 2026 with identical text and compared with the September readings; the Lake Buena Vista to TPA address returned Page Not Found. Uber’s TPA taxi page, whose 12 month UberX table would be steadier than any one month average, lists only Tampa, Clearwater, Saint Petersburg and two Water Street hotels, so no 12 month figure exists for this trip. Amtrak’s table came from amtrak.com, read twice in September 2026. No page of Mears Transportation is cited here.
The figures in this guide were verified in September and October 2026 against the sources named in each section. Parking rates usually change in January, shuttle fares and cruise line transfer prices change by season, and ship schedules change weekly; check the issuer’s page before you travel. No provider paid for placement here, and none can pay to appear. Where a booking link earns Lot and Gate a commission it is marked as sponsored and flagged in this line, and as of September 2026 no affiliate link is live anywhere on this site.
What travelers ask about the ride from TPA to Walt Disney World and Orlando
The six answers below use the 7 October 2026 readings, including the airport’s 76 and 85 mile rows and the Uber averages for Lake Buena Vista and Orlando.
Disney World sits 76 miles away in Tampa International Airport’s table of approximate distances, and Orlando 85 miles. Uber measures its nearest destination, Lake Buena Vista, FL, at an average of 79 miles and 1.5 hours from TPA. Neither row carries a drive time from the airport.
Uber files no Disney page from TPA. Its Lake Buena Vista, FL page averaged $100 on 7 October 2026, with UberX at $104, UberXXL at $110 and a slower waiting option at $72 over the past 1 month; in mid September UberX read $77. The airport adds a $5.00 service fee that no Uber page mentions.
Not on the airport’s own pages. Its ground transportation page has headings for rental cars, taxis, public bus, chartered and hotel buses, ride apps and peer-to-peer sharing, and the word shuttle does not appear in its text. The airport’s visitor guide of 21 August 2026 recommends renting a vehicle instead.
The airport sets no fixed fare for it. Yellow Cab charges $3.50 for the first 1/5 mile plus $2.85 per mile, and the $40 flat rate covers only downtown Tampa and the cruise terminal. Over the 85 miles Tampa International lists for Orlando, that formula comes to $245.18, a calculation rather than a quote.
Yes. Fourteen on-airport brands share the Rental Car Center, reached by the free SkyConnect train, and 13 off-airport companies collect at its remote curb. No rate for any of them appears on the airport’s pages. The airport’s directions route the trip by Interstate 4 and Interstate 275, 76 miles to Disney World by its own table.
Uber’s Orlando, FL to TPA page averages $96 over 85 miles and 1.6 hours, with UberX at $96, read 7 October 2026. That is $15 under the $111 outbound average. Uber’s route sitemaps list no Lake Buena Vista to TPA page, and Tampa International states no fee for drop-offs at its curbs.
A trip the airport measures twice and leaves others to price
Tampa International does the part of this trip that does not change. It separates Disney World from Orlando by 9 miles, routes the drive by name along Interstate 4, and states the $5.00 fee it adds at its own curb. Everything carrying a price comes from somewhere else: a meter whose flat rate stops at the cruise terminal, and an app whose averages carry two dates.
The result runs against the map. The Disney row is the shorter of the two on the airport’s table, yet on 7 October 2026 Uber gave both towns the same $104 UberX average, three weeks after the same two pages had them $34 apart, while the ride home is the one leg no issuer prices from a Disney address at all.
